Next generation sensors track people flows in retail and smart buildings

As we refurbish our Hursley site, we're using HELLA technology to instrument new facilities and track space usage and occupancy. 

HELLA is an IBM Business Partner. They are one of the top 50 global automotive suppliers, and their HELLA Aglaia Mobile Vision business is one of the leading global developers of intelligent visual sensor systems. Their new sensor technology tracks the number of people who enter or leave a building, and how long they spend in locations such as shops, offices, and public transport. 

IBM Hursley has used sensor technology as part of a mobile app that shows how busy it is in our popular new onsite staff gym- no need to rush there if it's already full, especially when it has 600 visitors a week. An employee website also provides historical data that reveals high and low usage times across a typical week, updated regularly. 

On the 26th floor of IBM's Watson IoT HQ in Munich, HELLA sensors provide data to an app that tells people how busy the cafeteria's coffee queue is. Colour changes indicate when there's a longer wait. Within two weeks, the app reduced queuing times by a quarter. Everyone in the building can now plan their breaks without wasting valuable time. 

The HELLA Aglaia’s People Sensors come from the development of camera technology for autonomous driving. They are positioned overhead to look down or sideways into an area, and stream the real-time data through the IBM Watson IoT platform into TRIRIGA Building Insights. 

Real-time data tracking can identify when hotspots get crowded or waiting times are high, with at least 99% accuracy. And they comply with data and privacy legislation in GDPR.
